In particular in the last 30 years, he has acquired broad experience in various aspects of Banking especially corporate finance, investment analysis and planning, credit and marketing, credit structuring and credit administration, Mortgage, and general management.
His career history is detailed as follows:
Nigerian Industrial Development Bank in 1978 – 1980 as a Research Economist.
Delta Steel Company Ltd, 1980 – 1988, where he rose to the position of Assistant General Manager. During this period he was responsible for Procurement activities in the nation’s foremost Steel Plant and was a member of several Government delegations on negotiations for the contracts for setting up the Steel Plant.
He joined Blackwood Hodge (Nig) Ltd in 1988 – 1990 with responsibility for Marketing in Nigeria and West Africa.
In 1990 he joined ABC Merchant Bank Ltd as Manager, Business Advisory Services.
In September/October 1992, he worked as a United Nations Consultant on Export Production Villages in Ghana. The objective was building export capacity for local products by assisting local entrepreneurial skills in this regard.
Between February 1993 & May 1998 he was at Fidelity Bank Plc as the Head of Corporate Finance, Corporate Banking and Senior Manager Branch Development.
He joined City Express Bank Plc in 1998 as Head of Corporate Banking and rose to the position of General Manager before leaving in 2002.
Between Sept. 2002 and March 2004, he was Managing Consultant, Fairdeal Investments Limited. During this period he provided venture capital services for startup small scale businesses.
In March 2004, he joined a team of turn around managers to revamp the ailing Liberty Bank Plc as Group Head, Corporate and Investment Banking and left in December 2005 as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer at the onset of the Central Bank of Nigeria consolidation agenda. Mr. Avwunufe then returned to his consultancy firm, Fairdeal Investment Ltd.
In 2007, Mr Avwunufe joined Spring Bank Plc now Enterprise Bank, as a Member of the Interim Management Board at the invitation of the Central Bank of Nigeria as Executive Director, Risk Management until the successful conclusion of this assignment in December 2008.
Between February 2009 and March 2011, he was Managing Director of Lagoon Home Savings and Loans, a foremost Primary Mortgage Institution.
Mr Avwunufe has since March 2011 returned to his Business Consulting practice at Fairdeal Investments Limited.
